SUMMARY:Freshwater Book Fair
DESCRIPTION:Freshwater Book Fair to debut this September \nThe rich literary tradition of the West Wight’s largest village is to be\ncelebrated in a new event taking place on the first full weekend in\nSeptember. Freshwater Parish Council\, which has taken over the freehold\nof the village’s library from the Isle of Wight Council\, is hosting a\nbook fair which will include live readings\, a book sale\, a publishing\nworkshop for both established and aspiring authors\, and a themed film night. \nSince Robert Hooke published ‘Micrographia’ in 1665\, authors connected\nwith Freshwater have included Alfred Tennyson\, Edward Lear\, Lewis\nCarroll\, William Allingham\, George Bernard Shaw\, Virginia Woolf and\nLynne Truss. The West Wight is home to many authors and aspiring writers\ntoday\, who frequently cite the area as an inspiration for their work\, or\nsimply as a great place to live and write. \nOn the evening of Friday the 6th of September\, the Friends of Freshwater\nLibrary will be showing the film ‘The Bookshop’\, starring Emily Mortimer\nand Bill Nighy. The library doors in School Green Road will open at 7pm\nfor the film starting at 7:30pm. Tickets will be £3 on the door\, or\navailable two weeks in advance from the https://www.fofl.co.uk/shop/\nwebsite. \nThe book fair will see the launch of a new ‘Write Club’ for authors at\nFreshwater Library\, with an inaugural workshop from 10am to 12 noon on\nSaturday the 7th of September. Entitled “How to get published”\, this\nworkshop is aimed at both new authors\, and those experienced writers and\npublishers looking for better ways to produce and sell their books. The\nworkshop is free of charge for participants\, but places are limited to\ntwelve and must be booked in advance by phoning library supervisor Anna\nBritton on (01983) 752 377. \nA book sale will open at the Freshwater Memorial Hall in Avenue Road at\n12 noon for sellers and 1pm for buyers\, ending at 5:30pm. All sellers\nare welcome\, from professional dealers\, to local publishers and\ncharities\, to book lovers and parents in need of a de-clutter. The cost\nto sellers is £5 per table\, with advance booking recommended via\nindependent bookseller Gail Middleton on (07973) 212 723. Folding tables\nwill be provided if required. \nThere will also be author readings at The Freshwater Coffee House in\nSchool Green Road on the 7th September. From 2pm\, award-winning\nchildren’s author Kieran Larwood will read for children eight years old\nand up\, while author and illustrator Jules Marriner will read from her\nbooks for children aged three to eight years. \nIn the evening\, from 7pm\, author and screenwriter Felicity Fair Thompson\nand guests will present their work for adult readers. Authors\, both\npublished and unpublished\, who wish to read at the evening event should\ncontact Stefan Powell on (01983) 754 095 to reserve a place. Baristas\nwill be on hand to serve speciality coffee\, tea and light refreshments. \nParish Councillor Daniel James commented “If the first Freshwater Book\nFair proves popular with local residents\, Island authors and the book\ntrade\, it could become an annual event. Our aim is to provide a\nlow-cost\, accessible event that promotes both local writers and our\namazing public library\, offering something for people of all ages.”

SUMMARY:Catrin Finch & Seckou Keita
DESCRIPTION:Tickets £18 online from http://www.wegottickets.com/event/446305 \nor in person from Mrs Middleton’s Shop\, School Green Road\, Freshwater. \n“The Osprey migrates between West Africa and Wales – harpists Catrin Finch and Seckou Keita join its journey on their exultant\, mesmeric second album\, SOAR.”\n4* Neil Spencer\, THE OBSERVER \n“They are now one of the most popular world music acts of this decade.”\nTim Cumming\, SONGLINES\n“an emotional demonstration of how two virtuoso musicians triumphantly bring different cultures together”\n5* Robin Denselow\, THE GUARDIAN (Live review\, Union Chapel\, 12 May 2018) \n“It’s rare that you hear something so beautifully conceived and performed” \n5* Simon Broughton\, London Evening Standard (Live review\, Union Chapel\, 12 May 2018) \n“…bitchin” IGGY POP\, IGGY CONFIDENTIAL\, BBC 6 MUSIC \n“You could listen to this 1\,000 times and still find something new” 4* David Hutcheon\, MOJO  \n“Hypnotic and ethereal\, SOAR is a unique marriage of cultures” \n4* Neil Spencer\, THE OBSERVER \n“… SOAR is about as near to perfection as is possible.” \n5*\, Dave Haslam\, RNR MAGAZINE \nThisisnowhere is thrilled to be able to bring the multi-award winning duo Welsh harpist Catrin Finch and Senegalese kora player Seckou Keita to the Memorial Hall for their final concert of an extensive Autumn tour giving the West Wight audience the opportunity to experience their remarkable new album SOAR performed in concert. Their performances of the album in spring this year garnered 5* reviews from both the Guardian and London Evening Standard and prompted Songlines Magazine’s Tim Cumming to describe them as ‘the most popular world music act of the decade’. SOAR\, their first release since their debut album Clychau Dibon in 2013\, entered the UK Official Independent Album Charts at #16 on the first week of its release and subsequently spent over three months at the top of the Amazon World Music charts\, hitting number the number one spot in the Trans Global World Music Charts in June 2018. \nThe new album SOAR takes wing on the flight of the osprey\, the magnificent raptor persecuted to extinction in Wales during the 17th century\, which has recently returned home after a 400-year absence. The osprey makes its annual 3000-mile migration from the estuaries of West Wales\, where Catrin grew up\, to Seckou’s homeland in Senegal\, West Africa – an amazing natural connection which hit a resonance with the two artists. Themes of migration – natural\, enforced and economic – run throughout SOAR\, drawing deep on the sometimes darker history of these two great musical nations. “Like the iconic raptor\, it swoops and soars to capture the bird’s very essence\,” says Dave Haslam\, in his 5* review for RnR Magazine\, “SOAR is as near to perfection as it is possible”. \n  \nTheir music has been described by Elbow’s Guy Garvey as “absolutely hypnotic”\, whilst revered British actor Toby Jones (Atomic Blonde\, The Detectorists\, Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom) says of Catrin and Seckou “incredible… you’re witnessing a state of rapture\, it’s entrancing”. This is music with a huge emotional resonance and a remarkable synergy\, a seemingly unlikely marriage between the cultures and of Wales and Senegal which has resulted in the most serendipitous of unions. Welsh traditional melodies mix effortlessly with Mandinka staples\, with hypnotic improvisations from both in an exhilarating and playful set which leaps over cultural barriers\, roaming freely in borderless musical territory. \nThe duo were recently invited to pen the theme tune for BBC Radio 4’s podcast series The Ratline\, written by QC Philippe Sands and starring Stephen Fry and Laura Linney. The podcast\, which released last month\, is currently available to download on BBC iplayer. \nBeyond beautiful in concert Catrin and Seckou create a uniquely spellbinding and mesmerising experience that has been filling concert halls across the UK\, Europe and beyond.  It’s music to delight all ears and we hope you’ll join us at The Memorial Hall for what promises to be a very special and memorable night indeed.

Each member will have a chance to sing solos with guitar or backing track accompaniment. SUMMARY:Robyn Hitchcock & Paul Armfield
DESCRIPTION:Tickets £12 online from http://www.wegottickets.com/event/447271 \nIn person from Mrs Middleton’s Shop\, School Green Road\, Freshwater. \n“I don’t come from anywhere particularly” says Robyn Hitchcock “but as much as I come from anywhere l come from this diamond shaped Island at the bottom of England.” \nThroughout his 40 year plus career that has spanned the world and 22 studio albums this wonderful and most English of songwriters has never forgotten or lost touch with the Isle of Wight and especially our little corner around Freshwater. His music takes him him around the world and he’s currently based in Nashville but it’s this Island he consistently returns to for grounding\, recuperation and inspiration. He’s written some of his finest songs whilst staying here and his hugely acclaimed 2015 album “The Man Upstairs” was recorded following a winterlong stay at Freshwater Bay. \nThose songs really come to life when performed live and accompanied by his great gifts as a story-teller and his off beat monologues fired by a vivid imagination an evening in his company is always a hugely engrossing and enjoyable experience. It’s immediately clear that you are in the presence of a peculiarly warm and potent personality and for Robyn his appearance here at The Memorial Hall fulfils a much cherished long lasting ambition that’s been with him since childhood. \nOpening the evenings proceedings we’re delighted to be able to present the very wonderful Paul Armfield making his his first appearance in West Wight for a couple of years. A huge talent and captivating performer Paul’s music career has been taking a back seat for a while whilst he has been busy transforming the fortunes of the Island’s cultural hub Quay Arts in Newport.  Thankfully he has found time recently to write and record a whole new batch of songs and he’ll be airing some of these along with choice picks from his extensive back catalogue when he appears at the Memorial Hall. \nThe doors for the evening will open at 7pm and there will be plenty of unreserved seating and a bar.

SUMMARY:The Poozies & Holly Kirby
DESCRIPTION:The Poozies \n& Holly Kirby \npresented by thisisnowhere & Vaguely Sunny \nDoors open at 7pm. \n£12.00 \nWe’re celebrating “Isle of Wight Day” at The Memorial Hall with a very special concert that is bound to put a spring in your step and a smile on your face by the sensational Scottish all female four piece The Poozies. \nThis will be the first appearance on the Island for this much loved Scottish quartet for many years and we’re delighted that they’ve agreed to come and entertain us in West Wight this time.  It certainly sounds like the time is right to catch them again (or to see them for the first time) as their new album “Punch!” has been getting rave reviews and we hear that their main stage appearance at this years Cambridge Folk Festival was a barnstorming event. \n“…What a mighty sound they make for a four-piece! It’s both bewitching and scary\, for there’s also a sinister alchemy at work between the four very different (and self-confessedly off-kilter!) musical personalities – and a keen sense of delicious mischief to boot.” David Kidman\, fRoots Magazine \n“**** ..this is high-tempo\, festival-headlining stuff.”  TimWoodall\, Songlines Magazine \nNever ones to let their incredible virtuoso musical skills get in the way of them or their audience having a good time Poozies concerts are always a real hoot over brimming with bonhomie and with lashings of energy\, vim\, verve and sheer pizzazz. \nSupport this evening is from the Island’s own Holly Kirby. Singer\, composer and multi-instrumentalist Holly is a very special  and charming talent whose own songs and cover versions have received hundreds of thousands of hits on youtube. Holly will be on stage at 7.30 so do make sure you get to the Memorial Hall in good time to hear her set! \nAdvance tickets are on sale online at https://www.wegottickets.com/event/447094 \nor they can be purchased from Mrs Middleton’s Shop on School Green Road in Freshwater or from the Memorial Hall.
